Roshin books publishes the volume Solitude Standing on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Ichiro Kojima's birth. Kojima, whose life and career were very short, passing away suddenly at only 39 years old, always captured in his photographs the hard life of the people who inhabit Tohoku, characterized by a very harsh climate, through his exceptional composition skills and darkroom techniques.
This volume was composed by selecting from the unpublished photographs preserved at the Aomori Museum of Art focusing on the aspect of "solitude" found in Kojima's works.
Along with Solitude Standing is also the volume Sunset of Tokyo. It captures the weariness of Kojima's heart during his time in Tokyo, as if reflecting his own exhaustion. The poignant and frustrating emotions directed towards the urban sunsets appeal directly to the viewer's heart. Despite his attempts to distance himself from the images of Tsugaru, Kojima could never escape the persistent imagery of the Tohoku region that followed him everywhere.
