"While traveling, I worked for about a month on a small ranch where there was a big-bellied cow. The cow was allowed to graze freely, and apparently gave birth on its own.
I wanted to see how it gave birth, so I even looked for the cow's shadow in the middle of the night because it was a full moon. During my lunch break that day, I found a cow lying in the grass and slowly approached it. As I got closer, the crowd of swarming creatures around it all flew off at once.
The cow had died with its belly still big, and only its eyeballs had been eaten.
One day, as the day to return to Tokyo drew near, I was sweeping grass in the cowshed when a colleague beckoned to me from a distance. I followed him to the pasture and saw something lying where he was pointing: a newborn calf." - Mai Nakama
